Staining your deck can be a daunting task - there’s a lot more that goes into it than just throwing paint on, and doing it right can protect your favorite summer gathering spot from the harsh Ottawa weather.
Whether your deck is brand new, and you’re looking to protect it through the hot summers and icy winters, or if your deck is grey and weathered, staining your deck is a great investment in your backyard.
In this blog, we’ll go over how to identify what your deck needs to properly stain it, and how to do it like a pro!
The most important part of the process is the planning stage. The first step to a successful job is identifying what needs to be done, and what products and equipment will be needed.
If your deck has never been stained before and doesn’t have any mold or mildew build upon it, then you will be able to get away with doing a light rinse with a nonabrasive chemical (diluting water with dish soap works great), and then giving it a light sanding prior to staining.
Next, it’s time to decide what stain you want to use on your deck. It can be tempting to purchase a cheap stain and save anywhere from 50-70 dollars a gallon, but once you realize how much work it is to do properly, you’ll be thankful you got a good quality product.
Another option to consider is what type of stain will you need? Do you have a nearly new deck that you want to maintain the look of? A transparent or semi-transparent stain will be best. Do you want a solid and opaque look? Then a solid stain will be the right choice for you.
Now comes the fun part, applying your stain! The prep is done, the supplies are on-site, and now all that’s left is finishing the job. There are a lot of ways to go about staining your deck, and truthfully, there is no one way that is far better than any other.
We find that the best way to apply an even, thick coat of stain is to use a sprayer to get the stain on the decks surface, and then back brush it with a thick paintbrush. We like this method because it applies more stain than we’d be able to if we used a brush but still gives the deck a nice natural look.
Sometimes, we won’t spray the product on, but rather use an applicator pad connected to our painter’s pole, following over the stain with a thick brush. The most important thing to remember is to back brush your stain regardless of what method you use!
